Balance training and falls prevention

Falls prevention programme

Up to 50% of people over the age of 65 fall each year. As we get older falls not only become more of a health issue, but also the consequences of a fall frequently become more serious. Falls often lead to fractures, admission to hospital and in some cases to the need for long term care. Many “frequent fallers” never return to their previous level of independence.

Causes

  • Underlying medical problems cause falls in the elderly.
  • Those taking multiple medications may be more at risk.
  • Conditions that affect mobility, balance, coordination and sensation.
  • Cardiovascular problems affecting blood pressure.
  • Confusion and dementia.
  • Sight or hearing difficulties.
  • Unsuitable footwear.
  • Inappropriate or lack of walking aid.

How can physiotherapy help?

Physio2go® routinely carries out falls risk assessments. Our specialist therapists work with patients in their own homes on individualised programmes of graduated exercises. These are designed to address specific areas of concern after a detailed assessment has been undertaken.

Residential programmes

Physio2go has successfully run a series of falls prevention programmes in supervised residential settings. These sessions aim to assess risk, provide exercise and balance training to residents and relevant falls prevention training for staff.
